ArmA II: Operation Arrowhead
Release Date: June 29
If shooters like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 feel too twitchy and arcade-like, then ArmA II: Operation Arrowhead might be a good fit for you. It’s a standalone expansion to Bohemia Interactive’s sequel released last year, and features even more hyper-realistic present day first-person shooting, this time in the fictional country of Takistan. Shoot things, command squads, pilot vehicles, and blow stuff up, all in an authentic war setting. If you never checked out this franchise or style of shooter before, this could be a refreshing, challenging change of pace.
Sid Meier’s Civilization V
Release Date: September 21
Unless Firaxis‘ tagline for this was “we’re intentionally breaking the game and making it as painful an experience as possible,” then just seeing the name should be enough to want to play. For anyone else who maybe hasn’t played a Civ game before, big changes are on the way in the fifth major franchise entry on PC. You still pick a nation and lead them along the path to one of several kinds of victory across a world map, but the way you move and the way cities and cultures develop will be quite different. An all-new system for unit placement and positioning will be in play, which from the looks of things could make the previous “stack of doom” Civ combat style look silly by comparison.
Elemental: War of Magic
Release Date: August 24
Stardock clearly knows how to make a strategy game, as anyone that played Galactic Civilizations can attest. For the studio’s upcoming game, you’ll select and customize a magic user and set down on sprawling world maps, conquering territory and growing your army. As special gear and spells and new lands come into your position, will you be able to maintain control of your border, or will threats from abroad cripple your empire of magic? With a dizzying amount of options for customization and dynamic elements that keep expansion and management exciting, we’re hoping for great things when Elemental launches later this summer.
Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days
Release Date: August 24
The thugs are back with a bunch of new multiplayer modes and a style that makes it look like their violent antics were ripped from a twisted reality TV show. Can the improve on what the original delivered, making for a more well-rounded experience? From what we’ve seen, it looks Kane and Lynch 2 is going to make betraying your friends a ton of fun.
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Release Date: September
Crystal Dynamics is trying out some new ideas in Lara’s latest adventure like co-op play and arcade-style leaderboards. Lara teams up with Totec, the Guardian of Light, in order find an enchanted mirror – that means you’ll be teaming up with a friend in order to solve the game’s many puzzles. Will it be a cool new addition to the universe of Lara Croft or lame spin-off? We’re hoping for the former, and from what’s been shown off, it’s looking good.
Mafia II
Release Date: August 24
We’ve covered Mafia II pretty extensively on IGN, so rather than tell you why we’re looking forward to the game’s August release, we’re going to just list some features: a nudie magazine with actual nudie-ity, the ability to drink beer in your underwear(!), a realistic 1950′s open-world, good dialogue (and lots of it!), guns, explosions, and plenty of organized crime. This must be what people are referring about when they talk about the “good ol’ days” and the family values of the ’50s.
Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge — Special Edition
Release Date: July 7
The fact that it’s the one of the original Monkey Island games — carefully crafted by Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert — but with better visuals is reason enough to be excited about it. LucasArts hasn’t rested on its laurels though — it worked new features in to help newcomers and console gamers ease into the franchise. For the n00bs, a more helpful hint system and a simplified menu mean that the world of Monkey Island is ready for anybody to enjoy. For the proper hardcore fans, LucasArts added a commentary track from the creators and a viewer for original concept art that you unlock as you play.
Need for Speed World
Release Date: July 20
The long running street-racing series Need for Speed is making its first foray into the MMOniverse with Need for Speed: World, due out in late July. World will focus on the less-than-legal aspects of Most Wanted and Carbon, and will be loaded to the brim with cars and parts, as well as MMORPG-style abilities. The earlier parts of World are going to be free, but if you want to advance beyond that, be ready to whip out your wallet.
Puzzle Quest 2
Release Date: Summer
What happens when you combine Bejeweled with an RPG? You get Puzzle Quest. The sequel is more of that same great thing, only better. These games are the definition of addicting, and come a nice low price. Need more convincing? Go read our early review. The game’s already out on other platforms, but expect a PC version some time this summer.
R.U.S.E.
Release Date: September
his game’s been on the preview circuit for quite a while now, but even if it is a little bit familiar in videogame circles, it’s still an exciting project. It’s an interesting take on the integration of ground-level combat tactics and larger scale operational management that makes it look as much like a real-time strategy game as much as it does a tabletop wargame. Aside from the stylish presentation, this World War II strategy game also features a number of deceptive tactics to disguise and distract opponents as you move units around the battlefield, adding in another layer of complexity on top of movement and placement considerations.
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
Release Date: July 27
Though StarCraft II isn’t due until the end of July, the multiplayer component has been playable in beta form for a significant chunk of the year so far. If you didn’t get a chance to jump in, then be prepared for a competitive online experience that maintains many of the core aspects of classic StarCraft while dropping in heaps of new units and abilities. What we haven’t yet seen much of is the single-player campaign, which remember is just one third of the overall story of StarCraft II. The Protoss and Zerg campaigns are due some time down the road, but for now it sounds like there’ll be plenty to do in Blizzard’s significantly tweaked Terran campaign in Wings of Liberty.
Test Drive Unlimited 2
Release Date: September 21
Test Drive Unlimited 2 might not have the same brand recognition as Gran Turismo, Need for Speed, or Burnout, but that doesn’t mean racing fans should pass this one up. Test Drive Unlimited 2 is a rare massively multiplayer racing title that celebrates the rags-to-riches lifestyle just as much as traditional driving. Players will earn money to buy exotic cars, luxurious homes and join elite racing clubs, all on an extremely accurate model of the Mediterranean island of Ibiza.
