Security in Google’s Chrome OS

In Chrome OS, Automatic Updates isn’t just an option?it’s the law. I had hoped that with Windows 7 Microsoft would stop making it so easy for users to opt out of Windows Updates; Microsoft let me down. If they must make it optional, the default should be ON with the opt-out choice tucked away somewhere that only power users will find it. Google has the right idea. When a Chrome OS update becomes available all Chrome-based systems get updated, period, and the digitally signed update comes in over a secure connection.
When the new download is complete, the system double-checks the new code. Only after validation does it “flip the switch” and use the updated version. If the process gets interrupted, you’re never left half-updated.
Α reboot should cure any malware attack that somehow compromised the OS. But couldn’t malware tweak the verification process to make itself look valid? Drewry’s video describes in detail the multiple steps that occur during verification?it sure looks hard to beat.
Chrome OS is strongly focused on the Internet. It’s not yet entirely clear how it will handle external devices like printers, iPods, cameras, and so on. Bloggers at DownloadSquad claim they’ve discovered code that implies the browser in Chrome OS will track mounting of removable devices, which isn’t typically a topic of interest for a browser. They speculate that the browser may take on functions similar to those of Windows Explorer.
